YOUR LOCAL RECYCLING RESOURCE

Supporting Kingwood and the greater Lake Houston Area
March 2015

We need your help!

There's a lot going on and we'd love some volunteers

Each year Keep Kingwood Green sponsors information booths and tables at various community events.  In the upcoming weeks we will be participating in Nature Fest at Jesse Jones Park, March Mart at Mercer Botanical Gardens on March 20 and 21, also the EcoFest on March 21, and the spring BOPA here in Kingwood on April 25.

In addition, we could use a student or young person with a pickup to help with our community event Recycling Service.

No special skills are needed to handle these community service type jobs.  If you are willing to spend a few hours meeting with the public, giving directions, and handing out materials, we could sure use the help.

Send your name and contact information to us at info@keepkingwoodgreen.org.  We will get back to you with details or answer any questions you may have.  It's a great way for high school or college students to get community service credit hours!
March is Always a Busy Month!

Here are the green events in the area that we are aware of:

Saturday, March 7thE-Waste collection at Metro lot from 9 am to 2 pm
Saturday, March 7th - Nature Fest
at Jesse Jones Park (Look for the KKG booth!)
Friday and Saturday, March 20 & 21 - March Mart at Mercer Botanic Gardens. KKG will be hosting a composting exhibit there.

And jot this date down for April:
Saturday, April 25 - BOPA at the Kingwood Park n Ride Metro lot, 9 AM to 1 PM. It's almost time for the big semi-annual collection of latex paints, oils, anti freeze, batteries, scrap metals, and large appliances.

Curbside Recycling Update

We understand that two more community associations have made the wise choice of offering curbside recycling to all residents.  By this action, the boards of directors in Hunters Ridge and Kings River will save many tons of valuable commodities from going to the landfill each month.  If you are in one of the few villages still not recycling, ask your board “why not?”

Congratulations goes to:

Hunters Ridge began on February 1st with Waste Management.  Collection day is Tuesday starting at 7 AM. You can
go to this site for more information.

Kings River has approved a new contract with Best Trash to include recycling for all at no additional cost on Saturdays effective on April 1st. For more information

Good News if You Use Weekend Metro Lot Recycling..

The City Solid Waste Department has agreed to have bins for all commodities at the location until dusk on Sundays.  In a cost saving effort recently they have taken some of the bins out of service on Sunday afternoons.

This should no longer be a problem and normally all bins will be available from Friday about noon until dusk on Sunday.  They have asked us to do our best to keep the glass bins free of plastic and other contaminants.  They would also like you to pour the contents of your plastic bags into the bins and take you plastic bags back with you for another use.  The plastic bags are a hazard to the sorting equipment.

Two New Recycling Options in Kingwood

ATRS now has a shoe and clothing recycling bin at the Metro lot.  It is available 7 days a week at the gate on the northeast corner of the lot.  ATRS will take any clothing or shoes in any condition as long as they are clean.  (very convenient when dropping off other recycling at the Metro lot)  So, please don’t toss something that someone else can use in the trash can.  Give it another life!

The Exxon Store at Kingwood Drive and Lake Houston Parkway now has a cardboard recycling bin on the east end of their lot which customers can use.  The bin has a fairly narrow slot to push the cardboard through, so you will need to flatten your boxes.  Let’s stop putting cardboard out as trash.  It took a tree to make that box.

Event Recycling Update

A big thank you to Mike Ibanez and Town Center Events for offering recycling services during the recent Mardi Gras celebration.

Over 100 pounds of plastic, aluminum and glass was collected.  If you are planning an event with significant recyclable product contact us at
info@keepkingwoodgreen.org to find out how easy and inexpensive recycling for your event can be.
