Residents respond to recycling loss

Cancellation of curbside recycling subscription service prompts Kingwood residents reaction

We have had a good response from residents of many villages who have offered to help bring curbside recycling to their neighborhoods.  The first step is for you to contact or attend a meeting with your HOA board.  Tell them you want curbside as a normal part of your trash service.  Let us know if we can come with you to a meeting to discuss recycling with your board.  Several boards are currently sending surveys to their residents asking if they are willing to pay a bit more for recycling services.  In one neighborhood the added cost is $2.50 per month.  This is actually less than those who were buying the subscription service.  Let us know how we can help.  E-mail us!

Congratulations to the board and residents of Mills Branch!  They recently elected to begin curbside recycling.  With over 1200 residents and using US average numbers, the residents in this village will likely save over 22 tons of valuable resources each month.

We hear from the recycling coordinator in Oakhurst that their curbside recycling program which began earlier this year is so popular that Waste Management has had to add an additional truck to handle all the materials.  Great job!

To read more about steps to expand curbside recycling in Kingwood, go to the current Observer Newspaper online and read Kevin McManisletter to the editor. You might be surprised to know that almost all of us in Kingwood pay to have our trash picked up while the rest of the City gets the service for free.
Don't forget to recycle electronics this Saturday!

Just a quick reminder that Electronics and small appliances are always collected the first Saturday of every month at the Kingwood Metro Park and Ride lot.  So, that is December 6th.  Look for the Compucycle truck.  As always they will be there from 9 AM to 3 PM and the service is always free.  They cannot take large appliances or anything with Freon in it, but almost anything else will be responsibly recycled.

Don’t forget to recycle that old cell phone or smart phone.  If you drop them at the monthly e-waste collection, Compucyle donates them to Keep Kingwood Green.  We are able to pay our expenses with the proceeds.  Thank you to both Compucycle and all who have given us your phones over the past year.  We also maintain a collection box at Alspaughs Ace Hardware and at Local Print Solutions.

Recycle your Christmas tree!

The City normally picks up cut Christmas trees from December 26 until the first week in January at the corner in front of the new Kingwood Library.  They are mulched and kept out of the landfill.  If you put yours out for the trash, it will go to the landfill.  So, if you hauled the tree in why not haul it back out to recycle?  When we hear the exact dates we will put the information on our website, keepkingwoodgreen.org.

Please conserve space in the big bins

If you are using the bins at the Park and Ride, one of the schools, or any of the Abitibi paper bins for recycling, please remember that December is a month of lots of boxes.  Do break down the box before putting it in a bin.  If you do not, it will take up valuable space and a big truck will have to carry it and the air inside.   If all boxes are flattened, it takes less trips of the big truck.   If you are bringing your materials in a plastic bag, remember to empty the bag into the bin and take the bag with you.  All the grocery stores have bins where you can take all your film plastic.

Thank you for your support this past year!

All of us at Keep Kingwood Green thank you for everything you have done to help make our neighborhoods and the whole Lake Houston area a better place to live.

We still have a lot of work to do, but with your help we will do it!

We wish you a very happy holiday season!
