E-Waste Recycling
Electronic Waste collection is this Saturday, April 1st from 9 am to 3 pm at Kingwood Metro Park & Ride lot.
CompuCycle is ready for your old electronics. Drop off your old, outdated television set, computer monitor or old hard drive. These items should never be thrown out with the trash because old TVs for example contain toxic chemicals like lead, mercury and cadmium These chemicals are very dangerous to human and environmental health, and they need to be dealt with safely.
There are limitations though: only if the tv is 27” or less take it to the monthly collection event. If larger, take it to Compucycle headquarter in Houston for free disposal or check with Goodwill or Best Buy to see if they will take it.

Free Paper Shredding
The City of Houston suspended their community document shredding program in Kingwood because of budget reasons some time ago. Nowadays it is difficult to find free shredding. Occasionally a private company, like a realty agency or bank offers the service as a promotion.
On Saturday, April 1st there is a free and secure shredding event being held - from 8am to 2 pm, just north of Kingwood, at the EMCID Complex, 21575 US Highway 59 in New Caney (entrance to the building is off Eagle Drive).
We don’t always hear about these events, but if we are notified in time we can list it on our website, our Facebook page, and our monthly newsletter. You can always take your documents to Local Print Solutions in Kingwood where they offer the service for 79 cents a pound and they often have a special lower price.
Also, instead of shredding the whole document, such as a credit card statement, rip out your name and account number, destroy that and simply recycle the rest. Granted if you collect the documents for a long time it becomes a real chore. If you do it monthly, it is simple. Better yet, go paperless on the bills and statements that you receive on a regular basis.

B.O.P.A. & Drug Take-Back
B.O.P.A (Batteries, Oil, Paint and Antifreeze), Major Appliance, Scrap Metal and the National Drug Take-Back Collection Event are coming to Kingwood on April 29th. Come on down to the Metro Park and Ride lot, enter on Lake Houston Parkway. Only rechargeable & lead acid Batteries, used motor & cooking oil and latex paint (no oil-based paint) and the limit is 15 gallons for antifreeze, oil and paint. Bring your driver's license or water bill as proof of City of Houston residency. See here for the flyer
B.O.P.A., Appliance and Scrap Metal collection takes place from 9 am to 1 pm and the Medication and Drug Take-Back from 10 am to 2 pm (since this is a National Program the times are set by the DEA.)
The Keep Kingwood Green crew is always at this event to help with traffic flow, to hand out recycling information, and answer your questions. Look for our tent near the entrance to the parking lot. We do recycle cell and smart phones as a fund raiser and would appreciate any contributions of those that you are willing to give us.

Rain Barrel & Compost Bin Truckload Sale

The Green Building Resource Center of Houston will help area residents conserve water and resources by offering 50-gallon rain barrels and 65-gallon compost bins at discounted prices of just $69.00 and $65.00. Made from recycled material, they come with instructions for easy set-up and use.

Buckets for you
Many of you are aware of some of the things Keep Kingwood Green members do to improve recycling in the Lake Houston area. Yes, we publicize and work at the B.O.P.A. twice a year. That may be our most visible event. One thing you probably never thought about was our involvement with the weekend recycling at the Park and Ride lot. A volunteer puts out the signs on the street each Friday morning. Before dark on Sunday a volunteer goes back to pick up those signs. While making those trips we report any irregularities to the City of Houston recycling management team. The City is very responsive to our suggestions. They often have to send someone out to clean up a mess someone decides to make at the drop off site.
One of our members became aware of how many 5 gallon buckets were going to the landfill from a local restaurant. Seemed none of the local recycling companies were interested in recycling something as big as a 5 gallon plastic bucket. Initially the buckets were given to this member to use at a school garden. After a while though, the school was overwhelmed with buckets. Now, when there is a surplus, they are taken to the Park and Ride on Fridays and placed in front of one of the large recycling bins. A sign nearby notes the buckets are free and compliments of the Tin Roof Barbeque and Keep Kingwood Green. On a recent Friday, 21 buckets with lids were set out at 10 AM on Friday. All had been taken by 9 AM on Saturday. There have never been any left at the end of a weekend. These buckets have lids and are wonderful for putting in your garage to sort your clear glass, colored glass, plastic bottles, and metal cans.
And speaking of recycling, one of the cooks at the Tin Roof often collects vegetable scraps such as potato peels, onion skins, carrot peels, lettuce ends and other none cooked parts for the school compost bins. Way to go Tin Roof BBQ!
